Calendar

The people of Community Living have participated in a vast range of activities in the recent past and are constantly planning and active participants in ongoing recreational and volunteer activities.

Our residents have attended Cowboy Christmas and Cowboy Rodeo in the Summer. They go on cruises and to Disney World. They go kayaking in St. Mary’s City, snowshoeing at Wisp, to Patsy Cline concerts, to Frederick Keys and Baltimore Orioles games. There is an active rivalry between our Redskins fans and our Ravens fans. Not much stops the people we serve from doing what they want to do, and we do everything in our power to make their wishes come true.

Recent sporting activities the residents have participated in are:

  • Floor hockey
  • Basketball
  • Ten Pin Bowling
  • Duck Pin bowling
  • Bocce Ball
  • Weight Training
  • Softball
  • Volleyball
  • Track and Field
  • Kayaking
  • Kickball
  • Track and Field
  • Horseback Riding
  • Kickball
  • Swimming

Our Kayakers are absolutely thrilled to be on the water and learning new skills.  They are not afraid of the water (or not too much!) and enjoy learning how to go through the gates. A number of our residents have attended the State Special Olympics in this event.

We are especially amazed that one of our Clients went to the International Special Olympics for Bocce Ball in 2008. Well, we weren’t really amazed as we knew of his great skill, but, to go all the way to Beijing! This is a great reflection of his dedication and practice to make it to such a high level.

Another sporting endeavor we really want to draw attention to is that we snowshoe. We take lessons at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in their sand Volleyball court for 90 minutes every week, and if we are lucky enough to get a real snowfall around here will practice extra in the “real stuff”. They attend the Maryland Special Olympics at Wisp every year and come home with medals galore.

In 2010 the  people we serve, staff and friends of CLI formed a Kickball team and became part of the Frederick Count Kickball League in both the Summer and Fall Leagues. We may not have won any games, but the experience far out weighed anything we imagined. Our folks learned about sportsmanship, teamwork and to lose graciously. The other teams learned tolerance, to have fun and not to take things so seriously.

Our artists are now very much involved in preparing for two art shows annually.  They prepare paintings as well as cards for sale. They assist in staffing the shows and preparing invitations for the events.

Our Clients are also great Volunteers. They have staffed a table for the Frederick Marathon. They have also painted props for the local ice skating rink and have supported their own by volunteering at many Special Olympics events. They helped a local business prepare for their opening day by painting the walls, and generally cleaning the facility. (http://dublinroasterscoffee.com/).  And now at Dublin Roasters they fill the bags and operate the roaster for the multiple flavors of coffee.

And lastly, our folks are in business for themselves with the Let it Sno! truck! Let it Sno! is a Sno Cone truck that appears at events here in Frederick County staffed by our clients. They appear at both company events as well as community events. The profits from Let it Sno! will be directly re-invested into recreational programs, such as the ones described above. If you are interested in having a Not-for-profit snow cone truck with 15 tasty flavors appear at your next event, please contact Carlota Salter at 301-663-8811 x218 or CarlotaS@communityLivingInc.org.
