William O. Lee, Jr., Award for Volunteer Service
Community Living, Inc. is pleased to announce two recipients of
the 2009 William O. Lee, Jr., Award for Volunteer Service. The award
was established to honor William O. “Bill” Lee, Jr.
President Emeritus and a long-time board member of Community Living.
The award was presented by Community Living, Frederick County’s
largest provider of neighborhood homes for people with developmental
disabilities at their 30th anniversary celebration Oct. 25.
The
first award was presented to Carlota Salter of New Market. Ms. Salter
is the Director of Independent Support Services at Community Living
and ensures that her individuals have the best in all aspects of
their lives: first in helping them determine the shape of their
lives and then fulfilling those dreams. She makes sure there is
appropriate staff to take people shopping, ensures work commitments
are made and kept and devises new activities for free time. Ms.
Salter is an unceasing champion of CLI participation in Special
Olympics and personally trains with our Kayaking, Snowshoeing, and
Bocce teams and encourages our residents to join the myriad of Olympic
and other sports available to them. There is no task too small or
too large for Ms. Salter to make hers.
The
William O. Lee, Jr. Presidential Award for Community Service was
presented to Larry Schaffert. Schaffert, of Myersville, has been
a Board Member of Community Living since 1994. He is a past Board
President, is currently serving as Board President and has been
unwavering in his belief in and support of the agency. Mr. Schaffert
participates fully in the lives of our residents but of special
importance to our staff and families, attends the funerals of residents.
Mr. Schaffert has been very involved in support of his own industry
as past President of MD State Builder’s Association, past
President of the Frederick County Builder’s Association, President
of the Professional Remodeler’s Association, Member of the
Carpentry Advisory Council of FCC and recipient of the Mike Bartlett
Spirit of Excellence Award. Mr. Schaffert is a friendly, knowledgeable
and welcome face at any event at CLI from Board meeting to early
evening dinner at a home.
Community
Living was proud to give these two awards to people so closely related
to the services they provide. The decision was made to make this
the last year to present this award. “Bill passed away over
five years ago. So many of our memories are of Bill giving out this
award and the great joy he had in doing so. It just seemed this
was the right time to retire the award with two people that I know
he would be very pleased to have added to the list He will remain
in our hearts always as we move forward,” said Susan Holton,
CEO.
The

items provide warmth and comfort to people who have lost their homes,
fled abusive relations, or are being cared for in hospices, shelters,
hospitals, and nursing homes. The blankets will be used by CLI residents
on beds in their homes and by those that are wheelchair bound.
